Game Rules

  • Possession is determined by a coin toss by team captains at the beginning of the game.

  • Games will be played in two 15mins halves with Running time in the first half, and stops at 2mins in the 2nd half. Baskets are worth 2 and 3-points like standard basketball field goals. The Big3 also has four-point zones on the court where baskets are worth 4-points.

  • There is a 14-second shot clock(if available)

  • A shooting foul awards one free throw the same value of the shot taken (ex. If a 2-pointer is taken, the foul shot is worth two points)

  • Overtime is first to 6pts.

  • There are no personal fouls awarded in Big3, meaning no player can foul out. Fouls are only registered as team fouls.  At the 5th team foul each half the opposing team will be granted two shots and the ball.

  • Each team gets two timeouts per half each game.

  • Substitutions are made on dead balls and during timeouts.

  • Team captains may challenge one shooting foul call each half.  Challenges will be a one on one with the person who was fouled and the person who fouled with the winning player winning the call.

  • The ball is cleared when the player with the ball establishes both feet behind the 3-point line. The ball can be cleared by dribbling or passing.  Steals do not have to be cleared.

  • Defensive rebounds must be cleared if the ball touched the rim. If the ball did not touch the rim, defensive rebounds do not need to be cleared.

  • Once a team has cleared the ball and establishes itself on offense, the normal "3 seconds in the key" rule applies.
There is no defensive "3-second" rule.

  • After a score, a referee must touch the ball. After giving the defense 3 seconds to set, the opposing team must take the ball beyond the top out-of-bounds line. Player has 5 seconds to return the ball inbounds.

  • A team's first technical foul results in one two-point free throw and possession. Additional technical fouls, as well as all flagrant fouls, result in two two-point free throws and possession.  If a player receives 2 technical fouls they are disqualified.

  • A defensive rebounder who makes a direct pass that clears the ball must clear the lane and re-establish himself before his team's shot or pass hits the rim(Adult League Only).
